A question we get asked from time to time is "How do I become an official"? The answer is that you need to have been a member of an affiliated team and raced regularly in the leagues for at least a full year. After taht, and having seen the task being carried out... have a word with one of the officials in your own league - and volunteer! Okay... you've taken the first step, and now there's a small surgical proceedure... no, not really :-)
It IS true that voluteering as a Kings Ski Club race official places you on the road to saithood though! You'll need to be able to command repsect from the racers, get them to the right place at the right time, be prepared to explain the complexity of the rules, maintain order on the slope, be used to working in all weather and... be fit enough to dodge flying racers while flagging (JW!) and fast enough to run away very quickly to avoid the "Exactly why were we disqaulified?" conversatio
Having done at least a year as a race official... you can go on to further levels of idiocy, and volunteer for a committee position! In all seriousness, we have a number of posts coming up soon so we really need volunteers, so DO let us know if you're interested!
Finally... the pay. Well, sorry, but apart from expenses to attend and the occassional trendy jacket, there isn't any pay! It really is all about putting something back into the sport... oh and remember to respect the golden rule at all times...
THE RACE OFFCIALS DECISION IS FINAL!
